After the iPad was announced for $499, (a few) people asked, "What about JooJoo?" the first $499 web tablet, formerly known as CrunchPad. Well, it's on. JooJoo's now in full production, and plans to open a web app store.

I talked to Fusion Garage CEO Chandra, who said they're not only getting another round of investing, they've struck a deal CSL Group, Malaysia's largest OEM—they make fabulous BlackBerry knockoffs called Blueberrys—to cover their full outgoing manufacturing cost in exchange for revenue sharing. In other words, CSL's covering the cost to make the tablet (which is being made by one of the "top three or four" Taiwanese OEMs, according to Chandra), and CSL gets a slice of cash from every JooJoo sold. The upshot is that they're expecting to hit their target of shipping JooJoos within 8-10 weeks of taking pre-orders—so like, end of this month—with enough produced to "meet demand," though Chandra wouldn't reveal specific numbers.

The other big news is that they're planning on opening a web app store. Chandra says that one of the iPad's advantages over JooJoo was the App Store, which made app discovery easy through categorization. The JooJoo take is that "the internet is the largest app store," and what they'll be doing is categorizing all kinds of web apps in an "app store" to make them easy to find. (Personal aside: The app store concept must diiiiiiieeeeee.)

To that end, the other thing the iPad has over JooJoo is that app developers can tap into the hardware natively, which is why Fusion Garage is introducing APIs to let web developers get at the JooJoo hardware, like to use the accelerometer for gaming. Chandra says that the APIs are "unique, but standards driven," and easy to extend current web apps with their relatively simple APIs. We'll see.

Asked what he thinks about the iPad more broadly, and Chandra said that he's amazed Apple's jumping "into a category that we've defined." He points out that JooJoo is African for "magical," which is exactly how Apple described iPad, and that the iPad even comes in at the exact same pricepoint of $499. (No, I'm not really sure how "African" is a language.) But, despite Apple being, uh, Apple, he thinks JooJoo has a few advantages: They're launching first; they've got a bigger screen (12.1 massive inches); and it's an "uncompromised" web experience, since they'll have Flash, and you'll be able to use sites like Facebook in their full glory, not miniaturized app form.

Feelin' Randy

Frozen Watermelon Rum Runner

3 oz. Watermelon Liqueur
2 oz. light/dark rum
1 oz. grenadine dash of sour mix

Mad Iguana

Midori Melon Liquer

Place syrup and lemon juice in 12 oz. glass. Fill with crushed ice and add rum and Cognac. Stir. Top with port. Garnish with strawberry or lemon wheel.

Rum Sour

1 1/4 oz. Myers's Original Dark Rum
Juice of 1/2 lemon
1/2 tsp. bar sugar
Shake with ice. Strain into pre-chilled sour glass. Garnish with lemon slice and maraschino cherry.

Sangria

1/4 cup Sugar (or to taste)
1 cup Water
1 thinly sliced Orange
1 thinly sliced Lime
1 750-ml bottle Red or Rose Wine
6 oz. Sparkling Water
Other fruit as desired (i.e., bananas, strawberry) Dissolve sugar in water in large pitcher. Add fruit and wine and 12 or more ice cubes. Stir until cold. Add sparkling water. Serve in red-wine glasses, putting some fruit in each glass.

Scorpion

3/4 oz. Myers's Original Dark Rum
1/4 oz. Martell Cognac
1/4 oz. orgeat
1 1/2 oz. Tropicana Orange Juice
1 1/2 oz. lemon juice
1/2 cup of crushed ice
Blend ingredients with crushed ice in blender for 15 seconds. Pour into and old fashioned glass over ice cubes. Garnish with orange slice and mint sprig.

Snickers Bar

1/3 shot Frangelico
1/3 shot Buttershots Schnapps
1/3 shot creme de cacao (white)
Hot chocolate
Add liqueurs to steaming hot chocolate. Top with whipped cream and a sprinking of crushed peanuts.

Sunburn

2 oz. Hot Shot Tropical Fruit Liqueur
2 oz. Grapefruit Juice
Pour over ice in a highball glass. Fill with club soda. Add a dash of grenadine for color.

1 oz. Blue Maui Schnapps

1/4 oz. Gordon's Citrus Vodka
1/4 oz. George Dickel #12

Splash Bacardi 151
2 oz. orange juice

Combine ingredients in shaker with ice. Shake well. Strain into tall, ice-filled glass. Garnish with orange and lemon rounds

Watermelon

Equal Parts:
Vodka
Strawberry Liqueur
Sweet and Sour Mix
Orange Juice
Serve over ice in a Collins glass

Zabaglione With Strawberries

2 cups quartered strawberries
3 egg yolks
1/2 cup sugar
1/2 cup Moscato d'Oro
Pinch of salt
Divide the strawberries into 2 wine glasses. Fill a saucepan 1/3 full with water and bring to a gentle boil. In a stainless steel bowl, whisk together the egg yolks and sugar. Add the wine and salt. Set the bowl into the saucepan of boiling water. Make sure it fits snugly without touching the water. Whisk the wine mixture vigorously until thick, for 2-3 minutes. Remove the bowl from the heat and spoon the zabaglione over the berries and serve.

OCC's unveils custom chopper for Seimen's Following Orange County Choppers' frequent use of alt-fuels (see E85 bike and natural gas bike) comes something a wee bit different from what we're used to seeing from the New York-based custom motorcycle crew: a fully electric chopper. Commissioned by Siemens USA, the zero-emissions motorcycle is powered by a 27-horsepower electric motor from Advanced DC and can go an estimated 60 miles after a five-hour charge. Top speed is listed at 100 miles per hour, likely making this one of the fastest bikes ever to roll out of the OCC showroom. Naturally, you'll get to watch the build take place on an episode of American Chopper that's current scheduled to air on TLC on Thursday, October 22 at 9PM. OCC says it has no plans to mass produce an electric chopper, but Senior says it's would consider it if adequate demand were there. In any case, you'll get the chance to own this example after Siemens take it on a worldwide tour in 2010, after which it will be auctioned off with the benefits going to "a charitable cause that will help benefit the environment."

With gasoline surging toward $4 per gallon and massive SUVs falling massively out of favor, it would seem that GM's Hummer division would be entering the autumn of its years. But according to J. D. Power and Associates, the brand captures and retains owners better than most, so it's worth nurturing. The trick is making hugeness less of a calling card - a process that started with the demise of the H1 - but preserving extreme off-road ability. As anyone who has done any serious off-roading can attest, size is your enemy on the trail, so a smaller but still off-road-ready Hummer, perhaps like the HX concept (below), makes perfect sense. The HX gives us a good look at the upcoming H4, and if that new entry has all the off-road gear of the show car, it'll be a strong addition to the lineup. The HX sports full-time four-wheel drive (naturally) with locking front and rear differentials, 35-inch tires, a 3.6-liter direct-injected V-6, and an electronically disconnectable front antiroll bar - not to mention that unmistakable blocky styling.

Don’t put your feet on this table—really. This multi-touch surface is part of a living room control system that could cost a cool $15,000 when it’s finally ready for public consumption. Right now, though, it’s just the conceptual brainchild of a team at the Upper Austria University of Applied Sciences’ Media Interaction Lab. The CRISTAL system, simply put, turns a coffee table into a universal remote for your home theater, lights, digital photo library, and even vacuum. CRISTAL (short for “control of remotely interfaced systems using touch-based actions in living spaces”) has two main hardware components: a suspended camera that takes an overhead image of the room, and a multi-touch coffee table. The live image of the room then appears on the table. From there, users can control devices in the image by simply tapping them. The interface itself will probably remind you of the Microsoft Surface tabletop computer--albeit on a more trimmed-down scale. Dimming the lights, for example, is accomplished with a quick finger slide, as is TV volume. What’s really crafty, though, is CRISTAL’s media handling: You can browse digital movies on networked storage, watch previews right on the table surface, and simply drag the film onto the image of the TV to start playback. The same interface also goes digital photos, but those you can view on either the TV or a digital photo frame.

Mission Motors Unveils Electric Bike 150 Mile Range and 150mph Top Speed

Luxury Sport Bikes: Today's Technology, Entertainment and Design (TED) conference held in Long Beach, California, saw the unveiling of a new all-electric motorcycle that its makers claim is the fastest of its kind in the world. The motorcycle is the new Mission One from American sports bike design firm Mission Motors.

The Mission One is the first product from the Californian start-up and it is destined to go on sale next year in a limited run of just 50 examples. Each bike will be priced at a substantial $68,995 but will be followed soon after by more affordable versions.

Power comes from a liquid-cooled 3 phase AC induction motor running on lithium-ion battery pack. The electric motor's linear torque curve provides peak torque of 100ft-lb at zero rpm - a feature petrol engines cannot match. This ensures that the motor delivers faster off-the-line acceleration than most petrol-powered motorcycles and does not require gear changes.

While no independent testing has been conducted, Mission Motors claims its Mission One will reach a top speed of 150mph and cover a 150 mile range on a single charge. Recharge times are expected to take roughly eight hours on a standard 110V outlet.

The Arabian Gulf’s first Super- and Mega-yacht spectacle, the Abu Dhabi Yacht Show (ADYS), which ran for three days this month produced major sales and quickly positioned itself as one of the world’s most luxurious industry events. In an awe-inspiring display of sea-faring luxury, the event at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC) featured a flotilla of 21 Super- and Mega-Yachts - some coming with price tags in excess of 200 million dollars - ranging in length from 30 metres to 90 metres and several ranking among the world’s 100 largest yachts. Over 100 exhibitors representing the world’s leading companies exhibited in the elitist event, which attracted a high net worth audience including members of the UAE, Kuwaiti and Qatari ruling families amid a host of yachting enthusiasts. And the show quickly won acclaim from the region’s leading businessmen. Among them was Ahmed Seddiq Al Mutawaa, President, Atlas Group, UAE. “This show is really going to go places – it is fantastic for a first time event – many shows in Europe cannot achieve this standard on the first time out. I think it has huge potential,” he said. Exhibitors too were effusive. Anne Blythe, Senior Registrar at Isle of Man Registry said: “Many people are unaware of the advantages which we can offer for them. ADYS represented a great platform for us to meet with other industry partners, shipbuilders, yacht brokers, designers and project managers as well as the owners.” Platinum Yacht 90 metre Dubawi, the largest yacht at the show, and one of the 100 biggest yachts in the world, stole the show’s opening day. VIP visitors also marvelled at Alysia, the astounding 83.5 metres US$100 million yacht, Lauren L, 90 metres, and Silver, 73 metres. Aviva, measuring 68 metres, is a stylish and well-engineered vessel that has been nominated for Superyacht Awards for each of the past two years. Also thrilling the VIP entourage was the 65 metre Ambrosia III, Oras at 40 metres, a 50 metre Benetti, a 38 metre Sunseeker, the 36 metre Wally Power - the ‘stealth’ of the waves and star of the James Bond movie ‘Tomorrow Never Dies -as well as Shelelia at 36 metres and an Azmuit 116 at 35.5 metres. Gulf Craft, the region’s leading boat manufacturer, also showcased its latest most fabulous vessels the Majesty 121, a 37 metre superyacht and its 30metre Majesty 101. The glittering show’s success has been attributed to strong government support, its excellent location – at the heart of a buoyant economy and mid way between the SuperYacht hubs of Europe and Asia - great features, layout and services as well as the diverse exhibitor range. These included yacht builders, yacht brokers, interior designers, naval architects, consultants, marina developers, marine suppliers and private jet operators, who together created a full industry spectrum. “The show’s success must be attributed to all parties involved, but especially the Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, the event’s headline sponsor, and other sponsors and partners. All have worked together for a common goal, to place Abu Dhabi on the world map of the Super- and Mega-yacht industry,” said Franck Dailles, Group Director of ADYS. “We unquestionably succeeded in achieving this goal.” The show also saw millions of dollars-worth of vessels sold. Many negotiations are still under process as sea trials have been taking place in Abu Dhabi since the end of the show. Ron Cleveringa from the Burger Boat Company said that the company has received good quality enquiries, which was very encouraging. “The Abu Dhabi Yacht Show is a unique show in a key market that we could not afford to miss. It helped us promote our brand to the market place especially in this new and exciting market which holds so much potential.” It also saw major regional premiers from Abu Dhabi Mar, 4Yacht Arabia, Al Masaood Marine, Al Seer Marine, Arabian Yachts, ART Marine among others. According to Dailles, exhibitors have reported more interest and business than expected, with the majority cautiously optimistic about the results achieved. “Over the past three days, we have enjoyed plentiful media interest, positive feedback from both our visitors and exhibitors and a healthy flow of visitors,” he said. “And yet, we promise to hold a breathtaking show next year in March 2010 with more exhibitors, more yachts and more luxury.”

Shelby Daytona Cobra: Highest Priced Auctioned U.S. Car at $7.25 Million

Mecum Auction announced that it recently sold a 1965 Shelby Daytona Cobra Coupe CSX2601 for $7.25 million at Mecum's Monterey Auction in Marengo, Ill. The selling price established a new record for the most expensive American car sold at auction. The event was held on the Del Monte Golf Course at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Resort & Spa.

It was a high point as well for Mecum Auctions, according to the company's president, Dana Mecum. "Selling this amazing piece of American race history at our first Monterey auction has been the crowning achievement of my career and Mecum Auction's 22 years of selling collector cars," Mecum further added, "This hand-built car beat the fastest cars in the world and has now added another 'win' to its list of accomplishments. It certainly finished in record form again."

Legendary car designer Carroll Shelby originally built the car to compete in the Federation Internationale de l'Auomitive (F.I.A.) World Manufacturers Championship for the GT class. Shelby's goal was to have a car capable of competing head-to-head against the event-dominating Ferraris. An experimental lightweight coupe body, designed by Peter Brock, increased the car's speed by a dramatic 25 mph. The specially built Cobra was named the Shelby Daytona Cobra to commemorate both its debut and first victory at the 1964 Daytona Continental.

Mecum's Monterey Auction featured more than 200 classic cars, ranging from a vintage 1931 Rolls-Royce to an exotic 2007 Saleen S7 supercar. The classic-car auctioneer is the largest of its kind worldwide, auctioning more than 5,000 classic cars yearly.

How to iron a shirt
It's the domestic chore that few men can ever successfully master. But with our easy guide to ironing shirts there'll be creases no longer...
Having thought long and hard about the ironing dilemma, our first recommendation would be to get someone else to do it! If that fails - as well it might - then just accept that you have to bite the bullet and get on with it.You can actually attain a certain deep satisfaction by completing a perfect uncreased garment and proudly placing it on a hanger before wear. So with that ironing nirvana in mind, read on...

The basics
It sounds obvious, but make sure you set up your ironing board somewhere clean and well lit - you don't want a shirt sleeve flopping into the cat's tray. If you're right-handed the iron-rest end should be on your right, and so should the electric socket.Fill the iron to near its full level with water - distilled preferably, definitely if you're in a hard water area (rusty stains on a white shirt are not yet a good look) and set the temperature to the heat on the shirt label (more of which later) and allow it a minute or two to heat up sat on its end. Make sure the heat setting is right - too hot and the scorch marks will make it appear as though you strolled a little too closely to a bonfire the last time you wore it, too cold and the wrinkles won't budge.If the shirt's looking excessively wrinkled from the wash, spray it first so it's slightly damp before ironing.

Tackling the shirt
The collarThis is where you should start. Lie the shirt out on the board with collar on the right and iron the inside first, from the tips inwards. Use the steam feature on the iron throughout and keep it moving every couple of seconds - popping off for a cup of tea at this point isn't advisable unless you want a fetching iron-shaped burn wrapped around your neck. Then turn over and do the other side the same way. You can fold it over and iron again if you really want to impress your friends at the golf club with a more defined fold on the collar.The yokeNext move on to the yoke - hold it, move away from the fridge. This isn't an excuse to treat yourself to a boiled egg, so get back to the ironing board. The yoke is actually the piece of material that stretches across the back of the shoulders. Move your shirt on to the narrow end of the board and lay it flat with the inside yoke face up along the board and press it. You might have to give it two goes, turning the shirt around if you can't get it all on the board.

The sleevesNow move on to the sleeves, which can be particularly tricky. Flatten one of the cuffs on the board and press it along the inside. Then take the sleeve of that arm and smooth it out along the board - when you iron try to match the already existing crease in the arm. Iron up towards the shoulder, then down to the cuff. Then repeat with the other sleeve. Sometimes it may seem that you're ironing in more wrinkles than you're getting rid of in an infuriating catch-22 situation. If this is the case try and remain calm - the temptation to screw your shirt into a ball, apply lighter fluid and a match will be strong. But instead lightly spray some water over the area and re-iron.The bodyFinally you can do the body of the shirt. This is the fun part, because it's the easiest. With the collar to your left, flatten the front of the shirt with buttonholes along the board before ironing. Begin with the top near the collar, pulling the shirt onto the narrow end of the board will help, and then work down. Work your way around the back of the shirt, rotating it on the board. Smooth the fabric down before you iron. When you get round to the button side of the front, again begin at the top and work down, using the tip of the iron to work between the buttons.And finally...Don't let all your good work go to waste by throwing your newly ironed shirt on a chair or bed and then sitting on it. Hang the shirt immediately, buttoning the collar and first few top buttons will help keep its shape.And of course if all that seems a bit complicated and time-consuming, there's always the option of non-iron shirts, which are right up there with the wheel and The Wire box sets in terms of great inventions of mankind.
